So This is What the Fuss is All About!

by Soliloquy on June 2, 2008

I’m baaaaaaack! What’s even better is, I’m back with a giveaway!

Y’all are settling into your summers and having your kids home all day.

I just left mine in Florida for the week with their grandparents and am settling into a week alone.

Wait, let me rephrase that. Settling into a delicious week alone.

A million things to say…. about last week – about Vanity’s Greyhound experience – about my day alone with Spin yesterday – about what I’m going to do this week……

But first, I have to show you what I’m having for lunch.

I KNOW. Bad, right? Don’t feel too bad for me. It’s better than this….

It’s really nothing a good whisk can’t take care of………

(And why are my photos so tilted?  I’m thinking that chiropractor put my head back on crooked this morning.)

Seriously, though. I’m seeing this doctor that wants me to flush the bajeezus out of my delicate digestive system with water – and it makes me well, not hungry. So I figured I’d have a go at “Greens Plus” so that even if I’m not eating much, at least I’ll be getting all my greens in.  I’ve never had a drink I had to chew though… it’s not nearly as sexy as Renee Russo made it look in the Thomas Crown Affair.  (Love that movie!!)

I must say – while it looks awful, but it really doesn’t taste that bad.

It’s better than, oh say…….. Pepsi. (And, yes, Queen B – I realize I’m breaking my own rule about posting that word here. But I’m comfortable using it in its proper context. Meaning is in people, not words.)

So Greyhound…. Yah. It’s a good thing I don’t have bladder control issues, because we’d have had an ugly issue right there in seedy Lake City, FL. Poor Vanity was a wreck.

We pulled into the station and she burst into tears…. I’m telling you – she is Vanity to the T. Having purposefully dehydrated herself in flat refusal to visit the “loo” on the bus, the speed with which she abandoned that resolve was astounding when I offered to take her out for a drink before she boarded.

One drink wasn’t enough. She did a shot of tequila, chased that down with a Corona and climbed aboard with her finger on her pepper spray trigger.

I won’t say much more, other than to point out the sweetheart in short white shorts standing in front of Vanity. Why yes – those are red high heels….. which seemed oddly appropriate as Greyhound-riding attire.

Vanity finished a book that she loved on vacation and passed along to me to read. I decided to give a copy away in her Greyhound riding honor… because it inspired her to write her own “essay” while aboard the bus about her experience. She texted me shortly after hitting the road saying it was “pouring out of her” and she’d already written three entire pages.

It KILLED me to not tell her about my blog, but for obvious reasons, I did not. She’s considering posting it to her own little public blog – so if she does, I will copy and paste it into mine. It should be a hysterical read.

So the giveaway book, I Was Told There’d Be Cake, is a collection of essays by Sloane Crosley. I’ve read a few of the essays and they are comical. Just the kind of reading we all love… totally blog-able experiences, written from a sarcastic, can-do-no-right perspective.  You’re going to love it!

To enter, leave me EITHER

  • a link to a post about something that you had to do that was really a stretch for you (such as Greyhound) – or an embarrassing moment….. you know – a time you felt you were really sinking low.
  • OR – if you don’t have a post to link to, leave a brief comment about something along the same lines as above that was worthy of blogging about
  • OR – just leave me a comment and tell me how much you missed me last week.  I’ll count those as entries, too.

After reading your stories, I will come up with a creative way to choose a winner on Friday, June 6th. Might be random….. might not.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about my week. ALONE.

So glad to be back with you, dear reader.

Worst thing I’ve EVER done: emailed my husband all the choice things I didn’t like about his family. Then accidentally cc’d his mother.

Oy.

I missed you soooo! But, and don’t be jealous, the Spin Doctor did a hilarious post. Job well done!

I did not miss you last week, mainly because this is my first time here. But, if it makes you feel any better, I love your blog, your layout is fantastic, and if you go away again for a week, I’ll surely miss you this time. Does that qualify?

I missed you as well. I have a few all time lows – you know this is true. Let’s see. I threw up in a cup in a bar once – to keep from making a big mess and a big scene. What was I thinking????????

No kids for a week! What are you going to do!? I want to know every little detail. I’ll live through you! I missed you! LOVED what Spin wrote!

Also, LOVED what you wrote about Vanity. My version of Vanity wouldn’t know how to find the bus station…she would call my dad first!:) That is the truth!

Well, going with the “vomiting theme” mentioned in the comment above, an embarrassing moment would be when I threw up off the back of a snorkling boat on my honeymoon — into the wind. Maybe I’ll write a more complete post about that one of these days…

Oh I so missed you last week! Ever so much! Did you miss me, too?

“a link to a post about something that you had to do that was really a stretch for you (such as Greyhound) – or an embarrassing moment….. you know – a time you felt you were really sinking low.”

I’d like not to admit this, but I was way beyond culture shocked when I first traveled to Ukraine to adopt my son. Within the first 24 hours I’d convinced myself that I’d either die of starvation or panic-attack myself to death due to the language barrier. Yet I still greedily vowed to stick things out in order to “get” the baby I came for.

Shame on me.

I shouldn’t have been so arrogant and upset about my son’s own country. I look back on that now and I’m beyond embarrassed for myself.

PS I’ve since been to Ukraine “for fun” on separate trips and am planning my trip (whole family in tow) for Summer 2009, for my son’s 9th birthday and a chance to meet his First Mother!

I’m wiping black streaks from my face!

No kidding, it was like an emotional reflex to start crying and laughing simultaneously when I saw that photo. An unfortunate flashback.

Thank you for the drink offer, I’ll say it again- one of your best ideas EVER!
