Approving the Use of the Word 'Damn'

by Soliloquy on July 23, 2008

My Nina used the word ‘Damn’ quite appropriately last week.

(I think she learned it from me.)

When our dog, Spree, got into the trash and drug the blood-soaked paper from a raw roast throughout the house (the same damn dog who nearly DIED only twelve hours earlier), my kitchen looked like a crime-scene.

Does she have a death-wish?!

Let me ask…. was I really to implement discipline when my Nina muttered under her breath, “Damn dog.”??

I think not.

It just warms the cockles of your heart when the little ones begin to emulate the parents ways and words….how absolutley charming. and adorable…..in a trailer park kinda way. And yet I would still be proud.

I have to be SOOOO careful about what I say. I have a tendency towards potty-mouthiness and more than once now the Little Imp has picked it up and run with it! There’s even a video out there of her uttering the worst of the worst.

Yeah, I’m certainly NOT winning Mommy of the Year anytime soon.

“Apparently” our buzz word is crap, because that is what my 7 year old was telling me he was deliberately NOT saying, when he spilled his drink, because he knows it is a bad word.

No discipline for Nina, anyway. That’s what you meant, right?

I love it when they use it in perfect context…ok, love might be too strong a word. I usually turn away and chuckle and then remind them strongly that we’re not to say words like that. I would have probably said something close in this situation though!!!!

I hear ya, sister.

Problem comes when the 6yo calls his brother a f****** a******, and actually used it appropriately. (Well, he was being a jerk!) (Full disclosure, it was not me that said it, that he heard.)

Yikes, did I just admit to the whole of the internet that we cuss like sailors around our kids? Oh well. Transparency. Struggles. We all have them.

I’m a sucker for grammatical and contextual propriety, even if with curse words…that said, damn is a verb and damned is the adjective.

You can thank me later ;)
