I'm a Freak

by Soliloquy on December 11, 2008

I confess….

I’m a freak. I am. I’m no less of a freak than Spin.

Because once I start the Christmas shopping, I cannot. stop. myself.

Which likely explains my hesitation to kick off the season.

Fear. Wisdom.

How long do you think it will be before Spin comes running to thank me for not starting the spending sooner? This Christmas would have been so much more expensive if I’d been on board back on November 8th when the insanity started.

Unlike Spin, I don’t mind the feeling of undone things hanging over my head. But once I begin them, I can match his obsession ounce for ounce.

Or maybe it’s compulsion.

Once I start, it’s a race to the finish. I desperately want to be able to say I’m done.

Except that subconsciously, I don’t really want to be done.

I want to keep shopping.

Every trip to Target is meant to be my last. Except that without fail, I have a new Target list started before I even make it home. The urgency to be done drives me back to Target.

I’ll make a trip just for Lifesavers. I will. And this is how it goes. Every time. Something catches my eye, invariably throwing the “evenness” of my lists off, thus requiring me to FIND something to buy to restore the balance of the gift list.

The pile under the tree grows and grows and grows.

I will December 25th come not from anticipation, but so I can be free.

This year, I had to get Spin a new stocking just to hold it all.

I told you. I’m a freak.

Every year we say we’re going to pare back. But we I never do. It’s a vicious cycle. Right up until December 24th. My generous Christmas spirit and my impulsive, compulsive nature are one.

I prefer to think of it as a spiritual gift.

Have I mentioned that gifts are my love language? Only twelve hundred times? Yeah – well, I don’t care if there’s NUTHIN’ under the tree with my name on it. Shopping for others is a gift unto itself. A gift for me.

12 shopping days left until Christmas.

But I’m done.

I too LOVE to give gifts. I really AM done with the exception of stocking stuffes and what I have left to sew, but I KNOW I will go buy more…it is a sickness.

I learned to scale back after watching Princess get bored with opening yet another present. Her face was screaming “let me play with my new toys already!”

Congrats on being all done. I’m getting close. I have a few handmade gifts to finish and maybe 4 items to pick up and I’ll be done too.

can i be related to you just so i can get a gift under the tree? there are always plenty of gifts for the kids but never for me/hubby. it’s sad really, but i seem to run out of ideas to buy for him and for him, i’m sure all of what i want is more than $20.

I am with ya 100%! Every year we say, “Now this year we’re not really going to do much spending….let’s not even get each other anything…..”
Sheah right!

I, too, am stuck in spending overdrive and somehow keep adding people/gifts to my lists! Yes, lists is plural.
Help!

Soliloquy –

“I don’t care if there’s NUTHIN’ under the tree with my name on it…”

Don’t y’all want to see THAT post…the “Spin didn’t put NUTHIN’ under the tree with my name on it” post.

I’m not falling into that trap…I was born at night, but it wasn’t last night.

So… are you planning to climb into that stocking to give Spin a December to Remember?

(I cannot even believe I just typed that.)

I’m almost done. A couple more out of town things to get in the mail by Saturday, and a few more things for the kids. HD and I are not buying for each other this year so we can hopefully get a big screen, installed, upgraded cable, etc. Although I suppose HD will sucker me into going out and buying for his family, too. (Yeah, I love to shop, too!!!)

I keep doing the “got to even out the gifts for everyone” thing. They all have to have the exact same amount of presents or they’re not going to be happy. Actually, they probably wouldn’t even notice.

I started out slowly and methodically, and then I just lost my mind in all of it.

Next year I’m going to try harder!

I’m probably not going to get much myself under the tree, and that’s cool with me. I like to shop for others, makes me happy. BTW, got me some Anne Taintor playing cards yesterday. Thought of you.

I haven’t even started yet. Unless you count the extra soap-making supplies I bought to make soap as presents? Although… I haven’t made it yet. :( I’m so far behind. And my first Christmas party (that I need gifts for) is the 20th. And then one on the 21st! AAAAaaaah!!!

Spin- glad you have a brain…. it will save you from a lot of trouble! Us women, we ALWAYS want somethin’ under the tree. ESPECIALLY when we say we don’t!

Soliloquy- Can I have a big stocking like that? Filled, of course. I don’t even mind if all of the contents came from Target! In fact, I WOULD LOVE THAT!!

Happy shopping!
