Damned dogs.
They are the bane of my existence.
Even the ones that don’t belong to me.
Look who I rescued today.

Awwwww, aren’t they cute?
You might think so, but a photo won’t tell you what they smelled like.
I can though. (And you would know too, if you caught one whiff of me.)
I need a shower. Eeew.
So I’m on my daily “loop” between schools and I have to stop short on account of the car in front of me having nearly hit these little ones, who then proceeded to run UNDER my car.
I put my car in park and turned it off.
Yes, in the middle of a busy road.
I opened my door and thankfully, they both JUMPED in.
Y’all. It was a busy road. Bailey and Macy were mere minutes from being roadkill.
The only tags they had were rabies tags, which is IRRESPONSIBLE at best, but better than nothing. I called the vet and got an address and a phone number and drove them home.
But no one was there. The open garage door let me to assume the owner had left in a hurry to give chase. I gave the dogs some fresh water and left them in a kennel in the back yard, assuming the owners would be home shortly.
That was two and a half hours ago. I still haven’t heard from them. They clearly don’t know their dogs are FINE. Heck, for all I know, they may not even know Bailey and Macy escaped.
And are those poor dogs still cooped up in that little kennel?!
Seriously? I’m a little mad. I should have just kept them for a while. Let the owners sweat it out a little. They were sweet. And little. (The size I THOUGHT my own damned dogs were going to be.)
Here’s the thing. This is the third time in three weeks I have done this. And the SIXTH in the past year. What does that say about me? (Other than I’m in my car too much?)
Well, here’s what I have to say about me.
I am not, I repeat, NOT a dog person.
I am however, a people person. I hate the thought of a frantic owner or a guilt-ridden driver for having hit a dog, because I wouldn’t want to be either!
See? I have a heart.
I hope there’s such thing as dog karma, because the day is coming that I become that frantic owner and I hope someone brings my girls home safely.
Moral of the story? Make sure your dog has tags with its NAME, ADDRESS and CELL PHONE NUMBER.

I love dogs, especially little shaggy ones. I really appreciate that you’ve done this so many times. My sister does the same thing; she’ll stop on an interstate highway to try to keep a dog from getting killed.
Yeah, I’d have been tempted to keep ‘em for a while since the owner wasn’t at home. I’d be pissed too if I hadn’t heard from him/her in all that time.

Sweetheart…dog karma would be our damned dogs running away…being picked up by some very nice, loving family, in a nice house with a big backyard…and keeping them.
Spin
What a fabulous story!
So ugly, they’re cute.
Does this dog “rescue service” you have going on mean something?
Perhaps, yes, you are in the car entirely too much?
Love you.

All my dogs have tags with names and phone numbers. You did a good thing today girl….
Connie
Maybe you could hire yourself out. You know, since you do it anyway.
It still makes me happy that your girls went with you and didn’t stay here with me! But we all know that you are a better person than me…..

They are so cute!
I would have little dogs but HD doesn’t think dogs that size are really dogs.
Hmph.

How kind of you to do this, and I agree with you – microchipping is preferred but AT LEAST tag the darned dogs!!

Oh, come now! Surely you meant to say how much you love dogs.
I am SUCH a dog person. How come I never find any? I’m trying to luck my way into getting a dog. In a couple years. Because I can’t handle it right now. But in a couple years, I’ll be a little less busy. (Please Lord, surely I’ll be a little less busy…).
I’m glad you caught those little cuties. Even if they did smell. I hope those owners are thankful.

Roxy doesn’t have a tag yet. Will do soon though. I keep thinking she may get out and some really nice family could adopt her. It could really be best for EVERYONE in the long run. See, this is why we are friends.
Oh, and who would name a dog Macy…gah.
