It's Never Not Scary

by Soliloquy on July 13, 2009

My “glass is completely full” morning was more like half empty.

Spree had another seizure .

I don’t care who you are, watching a seizure is upsetting.  While you know in your head that everything will be alright, there’s a fear that lurks in the back of your racing mind that they won’t come out of it…. or at least won’t come out of it without permanent damage.

What was better this time around was the aftermath.  I knew what to do, and Spree bounced back quickly.  I was more calm.  The last time she had a seizure, I happened to have a doctor’s appt. that morning and my blood pressure was through the roof.  I had to explain the huge adrenaline rush from an hour earlier…..

While I’m not glad it happened, if it had to I’m glad it happened this week.  I wasn’t here last week and won’t be next week either.

Just yesterday morning, someone was telling me about how they had recently had their first seizure.

It was a person.

How many talking dogs do you know?

She’d had an early morning, no breakfast and a flight.  She was told the combination of lack of sleep, low blood sugar, change in barometric pressure from her flight and some anxiety probably just created enough of a seizure inducing “cocktail” in her system.

We had storms last night that kept Spree up.  She’s terrified of thunder. So this morning the culmination of anxiety, loss of sleep, an empty tummy and the storm’s affect on the barometric pressure…. well, I guess she had her own puppy seizure inducing “cocktail”.

Even though she seems fine, I’ve decided to take her to the vet anyway.  I think she needs something from the valium family during storms and while we’re at it, right before the groomer shows up, and hm…. perhaps when we leave on trips.

My dog is a mental case.

Does anyone have experience with a dog who either has seizures or is on psychiatric drugs?

My beloved dog when I was growing up had occasional seizures in her twilight years. So scary to watch. We would just kind of pet/massage her through it.

Speaking of massages. I could SO use one. Stupid moving.

Our cocker Spaniel developed a seizure disorder as she aged.
There was medication we could put her on, but my mother did not believe in paying for meds for a dog.
We would hold her through them, there didn’t seem to be much of a trigger for them.
As they got worse she would often puke and poop uncontrollably through them. Just sayin’.
Sorry, I can’t be of more help.

Our dog Macy had several seizures back to back. It was after I had dropped a fluid pill on the ground and couldn’t find it. About 20 minutes later she started seizing. It was terrifying. Our vet swore that the fluid pill wouldn’t have done anything to her, but I’m not convinced. She was on pheno-barbital for about 2 weeks after that but it made her so drunk we had to take her off it is. That was about 6 months ago and it hasn’t happened since.

Good luck. It’s awful watching your dog seize, and I hope it gets better soon for your pup!

Did you see Marley & Me? He was pretty neurotic. I don’t have personal experience with this but I know there are good meds out there for dogs like yours. Good luck!

My best bud Canuck K’s dog had seizures as he got older. She had him on phenobarbital for a time, but it made him so spaced out, she took him off of it.

When I was growing up we had a dog that had seizures. They vet put him on Phenobarbital. The only way the damn dog would take his medicine was if we wrapped it up in a piece of lunch meat.

My friend’s beagle has started having seizures as she has gotten older. She is on some type of meds (the dog, not my friend! ha!) and that has kept her from having any recently.

OK for the first half of this post, I thought you were talking about one of your kids.

Even though I know a dog is part of the family, etc.

Your life just keeps spinnin’, girl!

A few years ago we had a hound who had seizures which, were, like you said, completely unsettling to watch.

We ended up putting him on a anti-anxiety med for canines as well as a natural diet, heavy in whole grains and some raw foods as well. It seemed to help out a great deal.

Hope you can find something for Spree that helps with the seizures. It’s really an awful thing to go through.
